When most people think of hair loss products, they think of the problems men face and the solutions they need. But women suffer from hair loss, too, and someone needs to think of them. Fortunately, companies have: minoxidil is available to women in a smaller dosage than is usually recommended for men, and a lot of the downsides this medication has for men do not apply to women, although there are still a couple of things to worry about.
The higher dosage recommended for men only is the 5% dosage. Women, instead, should purchase and use no more than a 2% dosage of minoxidil. This lower dosage is perfect for women; it can fill in bald spots and thin areas, giving you thicker, fuller, and healthier hair, keeping you looking young and vibrant. Even if your hair loss is more severe than that of other women, you may still want to avoid the 5% variety of minoxidil; some women reported that its use led to unwanted facial hair growth.
There are a few drawbacks for men using minoxidil that don't apply at all to women. If a man has been bald for 10 or more years and has large areas of baldness or is even completely bald, minoxidil is not as effective at regrowing his hair. It is not as effective on a man's receding hairline or temples, either. But women usually will only let a very short time pass before they start battling hair loss, so you probably don't have to worry about long-term issues. Women also rarely have more than a small area of baldness, and rarely anywhere besides the crown of the head, where minoxidil is most effective.
There are still a few issues to be aware of. Minoxidil has been known to cause skin irritation in some cases, so stop taking it until you can talk to your doctor if this occurs. It may also give your hair a slightly greasy appearance, since you apply it after you have washed your hair, but you are probably an expert at styling your hair and will find a way to cover that up easily.
Hair loss treatment is not only for men. It can be perfect for women in its lower dosage variety, dodging some of the drawbacks minoxidil has for men, even though it retains a couple of those drawbacks.
